Social Sciences

In New South Wales, Human Society and Its Environments (HSIE) is a mandatory subject in years 7 through 10. It is essentially an amalgam of the social sciences and includes history, geography, economics, and civics and citizenship. I spent about two and a half years teaching HSIE to primary school teacher students at Southern Cross University. What grew out of this experience was the desire to really act on some of the topics we discussed in class, which resulted in my convening the local action group for Amnesty International for a couple of years and doing my honours thesis on student activism.
